Tiaro & District Landcare Group
Introduction to Tiaro Landcare
Tiaro & District Landcare Group was established in 1997 in response to a meeting of local landholders who were concerned about the health of the river environment. Landcare is a uniquely Australian partnership between the community, government and business which aims to ‘do something practical’ about protecting and repairing our environment.
The health of our district is dependent on the condition of the Mary River, previously known as Moonaboola, her many subcatchments and all the plants and animals that are sustained by her.
Together with our many partners and volunteers, Tiaro Landcare is striving towards sustaining our unique environment and local agricultural enterprises.
Key projects include:
Annual Catch & Release Fishing Competition – promoting sustainable fishing practices. Proceeds support conservation of endangered Mary River Cod and Mary River turtle
Annual Tiaro Field Day – showcasing practical farming solutions
Promotion and demonstrations of sustainable agricultural practices
Increasing population of endangered Mary River turtle
Tertiary support scholarship for research on endangered Mary River turtle
Fundraising through sale of chocolate turtles
